The year was 2020-something. A 3D artist named Johan was on a Zoom call from his parents' house. Mid-meeting, a flock of chickens escaped indoors and strutted behind him on camera, instantly stealing the show.
Among them: Håkan — a friendly, cuddly rooster, blind in one eye, who stumbled over his own feet and stepped into his food. Nobody listened to the meeting after that.
Johan did what any reasonable game developer would do. He photoscanned Håkan and secretly added the rooster into the game as a hidden Easter egg, sprinting around the cantina like he owned the place.
When Embark Studios needed a resource-producing NPC, the team brainstormed. Robots? Cats? Robot cats?
They were running out of ideas. Then someone uttered the five words that changed everything:
"Don't we already have a rooster?"
And just like that, a hidden Easter egg became the backbone of the entire game's economy.
Scrappy was slotted in as a placeholder. "We'll definitely replace this with something proper," they said.
They never replaced him. You don't replace a legend.
Today, Scrappy collects metal parts, fabric, chemicals, plastic, and rubber while you fight ARC machines topside. He grinds while you sleep. He hustles while you bleed. He is the silent engine of every raider's operation.
